Mountain Biking in Prescott

gemsm1.gifRiding a bicycle is one of my earliest and happiest memories. The youngest of seven grandchildren, I learned to ride a two-wheeler quite young, so I could keep up with my older siblings and cousins. And I never looked back!

Before moving to Prescott 18 years ago, I was strictly a “roadie,” a rider who biked only on paved roads. Back east where I grew up, gravel, dirt and forest roads did not exist. But once I began riding here, I soon realized that there was a whole other world out here for me to discover, on two wheels.

bike-smith-graphic-ad.jpgThe untold miles of unpaved roads and trails in the Prescott area have made a convert out of me. I have traded those paved roads, with little or no shoulder, and traffic whizzing by, for the beauty and solitude of the forest. Whether alone or with friends, I spend many happy hours rolling along.

Mountain biking is quite challenging for me, especially since I didn’t begin until my early 50’s. Some very different skills are required for this pursuit. Intense concentration is necessary to negotiate the twists and turns, climbs and descents, and the big rocks and loose stones. When I need a break to catch my breath, there is always a great view and a rock or stump to sit on. And when the going gets too tough for me to continue, I just get off and take my bike for a walk. It hasn’t complained yet!

With so many days of sunshine each year, the weather here is extremely pleasant for outdoor activities. In fact, the climate has spoiled me. On the few days that it is raining or snowing, I just don’t go out, knowing that the sun will be shining soon.

Another benefit of mountain biking is the opportunity to see wildlife. The most common animals I’ve seen on rides are deer, javelina, coyotes, roadrunners, and snakes. While sightings don’t occur on every ride, the chance is always there, especially early in the morning. Once I saw a bobcat!

There is a bicycle club in town that sponsors organized rides each week. It’s a great way to meet new people and find new trails.

The attraction of the climate and the mountains is what drew me here in the first place. Discovering the joys of mountain biking has been the icing on the cake.

Happy Riding!
