Yavapai Campground, space #15
There are a number of campgrounds around Prescott, but I had never experienced any until recently purchasing a popup camper. What better way to get started than to visit our local spots, stay at them, and then share what they are like?
Before you head out to camp in the Prescott area, check the links at the end of this post to decide where you would like to go and make sure you know the fees and rules that pertain. For example, in Arizona, you are
permitted to use “Dispersed Camping” areas, which are public lands that aren’t within a designated camp area, as long as you follow the rules which apply. Here are guidelines.
One other matter to consider is the disposal of your grey water. While some states are very clear, I found it not so clear in researching Arizona’s laws on grey water dispersal. Here is an article that explains the grey water issue.

After camping in our front yard for a weekend, we hitched up the JayCo and drove out to Yavapai Campground, which is in the Granite Basin area off Iron Springs Road. With some beautiful granite outcroppings and spires, abundant juniper and piƱon pines, each space is somewhat screened from neighboring sites. There are beautiful views of Granite Mountain, and access to the extensive trail system in the Granite Basin area begins right at the campground. Nearby, we found adequate mesquite and oak for our evening campfires.
Loads of bees and hornets, though, so if you don’t like stingers, you might not want to go to this area in September. AND if you have spring allergies, avoid it entirely during those months due to the junipers.
Tomorrow we’re headed out to Lynx Lake to try one of their two campgrounds. In fact here is a very detailed description Lynx Lake Campground, by “Have Fun in the Southwest.”
