P.A.F. writes: “We lived in Prescott when I was a small child. My dad was killed racing in Holbrook, AZ in 1949. I was 4 yrs. old then, but we lived on Farmer’s Lane and I remember the big rock that was on our porch. I had three older sisters that attended Miller Valley School. Our father, Lionel Aderton, was a mechanic at Hassayampa Motors, on the south end of Whiskey Row. It is now The Galloping Goose. I have been back three times in the last 10, years trying to associate with my past. We only lived there 3 yrs. but I love Prescott!”

“I always wondered what kind of business was where the Galloping Goose is now, since it has that diagonal area that you can tell was for vehicles. That is a sweet reminiscence, P.A.F., and I appreciate you sharing it.”

KB replies: “Wow, that is a long time ago. That wasn’t the Super Carrot Coop thing, was it? Or was that where Common Ground is/was. If it wasn’t the Super Carrot, I can’t remember.”

On this page we publish short memories and anecdotes about Prescott’s illustrious (and notorious!) past. Love stories, family oral history, simple fleeting recollections, whatever you’ve got.

  1. My mother was born, raised and died in Prescott in 1979, when I was 15. Her parents and grandparents owned the property on Farmer’s lane and rented out the houses her father built there. The railroad used to go up Gail Gardner to Iron Springs, but the tracks were long gone when I roamed the area. My Grandpa Crotts owned the Borden’s Dairy off Iron Springs Road, about where the stoplight is now. After that land was sold out of our family, my siblings and I have had frequent dreams of our idyllic childhood there. I’ve finally returned to give my children similar dreams.
