Prescott Yoga Studios and Classes

gemsm1.gifThere are so many yoga classes and studios in Prescott, I don’t know where to begin to collect information on all of them. So… I decided to ask friends who take yoga classes to tell me about their experiences. Here’s a list that I’m sure will grow by word of mouth:

Rian and Maria McGonigal are a husband/wife team who teach yoga at several locations in the Prescott area. Although they are my first experience with yoga, I have taken classes from them for almost a year, and they are outstanding. They teach private and semi-private lessons in their own studio, as well as classes at Yavapai College (a great financial bargain), and at a local church. Prescott Yoga teaches Anusara Yoga (in downtown Prescott near Prescott Coffee Roasters) which is a unique method of hatha yoga that integrates biomechanical principles of alignment with the celebration of the heart and spirit. I have been attending classes with Christina Sell the founder and director since she first opened the studio. Through the years she has brought in many wonderful instructors to assist her.

Thus far in my life I have been a hot and cold yoga chick. One of the things that I love about this studio is that their is no competition or judgment. You are where you are and that is awesome. Christina has created a really great atmosphere to practice in. Everyone who attends the classes is loving and encouraging towards each other and celebrates when your unique body finally surrenders to a pose.

Though there are restorative classes offered, most of the level classes and flow classes will kick your butt in that way that feels really good after you know you did not die in the middle of class. As you are gently trying to turn your gasps for air after uncountable sun salutations into sweet and soft breath while your legs are shaking in the resting downward dog pose, Christina or one of the other instructors will make you laugh and suddenly the steadiness comes back naturally. The enthusiasm and excitement about Life that these instructors bring to their practice and teaching leave you feeling dynamic and vibrant no matter how challenging your outside life may be.
