Yummy Dining in Prescott

gemsm1.gifOr “delicious deliciousness” as my daughter-in-law Brittany would put it!

Prescott is home to lots of restaurants, and of course l have personal favorites. But this site is all about letting locals tell the Prescott story, and I’d love to hear about the places you have tried. (you can email your stories to ktcosmos-at-LooseEnds-dot-net or post them as comments here.)

Craig Dombey recently launched Prescott-Good-Eats.com. While you can’t leave comments on the site, Craig offers his reviews of every locally-owned restaurant he visits. It’s a great starting point for finding places to dine in Prescott. Craig catalogs the restaurants he has visited in this index.

Local resident and blogger Tombo, periodically publishes reviews places he’s tried on his blog, and he has given permission for me to share some of them with you here. (Tombo may be reached for comment on his blog or at tombocheckjunkmail@gmail.com). Look for more reviews here by Tombo and other Prescottonians in coming months.

Firehouse Kitchen (Goodwin St.):

Tombo says: “A new restaurant located in the Old Firehouse Plaza. Small capacity, and you have to go up a flight of stairs outside to use the restroom (not the best layed out restaurant). The food is awesome however. They are now open for lunch, which is relatively well priced (~$10 a plate). Their dinner is also phenomenal, though more expensive at about $20 a plate. I guess you could call it Modern American food, with the gamut running from Crab Cakes to BBQ Beef Brisket, Hamburgers, Mac & Cheese, etc. My favorite waiter in town (Ralph) is working here, and they also just opened an appetizer and martini bar upstairs with live piano every night.

ktcosmos asks: Tombo, is it a young crowd, or people of all ages? I have been meaning to get in there and try it but I keep forgetting it’s there. Also, do you know if they take reservations? And, how long’s the wait in your experience?

Hawaiian Grille (W. Sheldon Street by Prescott College):

Tombo says: I’ve only been in here once, but I was very impressed with the food. It is a tiny restaurant (I believe there were only 6 or 7 tables), and the food was on the pricey side ($34 for two of us), but the tastes were killer! I keep meaning to go back, but never seem to be able to make it over there.

ktcosmos remarks: I have only been there once as well, and it was DELICIOUS (deliciousness) and so different from anything else in Prescott. But then I kept trying to go back again and never found it open. I have heard there are new owners, and notice their signs seem to be out all the time, which may mean they are keeping more regular hours that before.

Prescott Pantry (Iron Springs Road, next to Sundance Carwash):

Tombo says: A great place that has been around for a long time. Sandwiches and soups are great here. A little pricey for what you get, but darn tasty, with a very helpful staff.

ktcosmos says: I have been eating there for years, across, I think three different owners. It is consistent and good food for breakfast or lunch. The decor now is a little strong on teapots and things for Red Hat Society ladies (for my taste, at least), but the owners and staff are very nice and accommodating. I really like this place for a business lunch (during off hours since it gets really crowded), and also for quick lunches with my adult kids when they are home for a visit. Also, if we are heading out of town, we call in a “Smoked Turkey Melt” to go to consume on the road.

Another local, “swami12,” sent in this review:

El Gato Azul (Goodwin St.):

Swami12 says: This is one of my favorite places to eat in Prescott. Prescott is not known for haute cuisine – but El Gato makes a really good effort at distinctive and yummy dishes. Lunch is a sure bet, sit out by Granite Creek, have some sangria, and enjoy just about anything from the menu. The tapas menu that starts at 4pm is extensive, and since I’ve only tried a few things from it, I can’t tell you all about it – but the fried avocado was interesting and good, and the mussels were fabulous, and I don’t usually eat shellfish at all. Its not a cheap place to dine, but I think the quality is worth it. Would not recommend this for the non-adventurous eaters out there, as creativity is a part of all dishes I’ve tried and you won’t find “standard fare”. But that’s exactly what I like about it! They also have music some nights and quite a few good tequilas.

ktcosmos adds: Swami12, I remember two earlier restaurants that were located where Gato is now. They were both great (IMHO), making me think there’s something about being located right next to running water that makes lasting magic. I love the tapas there (but portions are tiny), AND I had my first mojito there one hot summer night. Yum. Paella is great and I think they have some nice wines. Are they still open for breakfast? I have never tried that.
